Job Title: Reading Tutor

Program Goals: Assist in the development of reading skills for local Kindergarten-5th graders because early grade reading skills are a key factor to academic success and high school graduation rates.

Task Objectives:
•       Work directly with children in a small group setting under the
direction of the classroom teacher
•       Implement specific instructional strategies/programs as directed
by the  teacher
•       Develop positive relationships with students and model positive
interactions with students

Responsibilities:
•       Act as a liaison between the school, the business community,
and the Greater Lafayette community
•       MUST attend a training prior to volunteering
•       MUST attend tutoring sessions regularly
•       Arrive to school a few minutes before your tutoring session is
scheduled to begin
•       Communicate any issues or difficulties with the school staff or
site coordinator
•       Follow all school procedures (sign in at office, etc.)
•       Notify the teacher in the event that you will not be able to attend
due to illness or emergency
•       Tutor the assigned student(s) to the best of your abilities
•       Exhibit appropriate behavior; follow the school’s code of conduct

Qualifications:
•       Must have the ability to read
•       Must have a desire to work with children
•       Must be reliable
•       Must be able to provide your own transportation
•       Must be willing to take direction from a classroom teacher
•       Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
•       Must be able to pass a limited criminal background check

Training and Supervision:
•       Must attend a one hour training session prior to volunteering
•       Will received ongoing feedback and training from the teacher
•       Will report directly to the teacher

Evaluation:
Will have an opportunity to evaluate and provide feedback
regarding your volunteer experience

Commitment:
Must commit to one hour a day, one day a week
